About
Amanda Prabhakaran
RMN, BABCP (Accred.) · Ferndown, Dorset · Online & phone
I have been in mental health since around 1990: first psychology, then addictions and sexual health, then mental health nursing, and finally training as a therapist. I was in the NHS until 2024 and have been in private practice full-time since.
Life can be quite messy at times. We all have the skills to manage, but sometimes we get a little bit stuck. My own experience of being dismissed when vulnerable is part of why I take my time to listen.
I work with professionals from business, education, finance and healthcare, and I have experience running meditation, mindfulness and ACT groups.
How I work
Gentle and kind, without being soft on the work.
I create a safe, confidential space where you can pause and slow down. When we do less, it can sometimes be more.
I like to say it is CBT, compassion-focused therapy and mindfulness with a hug. Being gentle is my way, but that doesn’t mean I won’t challenge when it’s needed.
We are born with an empty suitcase, and other people fill it. At some point we realise those ways no longer serve us. Therapy helps you unpack it, rearrange it, and find something new that is yours.

Practicalities
Ferndown, Dorset & online
I’m based in Ferndown, Dorset. Sessions are currently by secure video or telephone. I’m keen to offer in-person sessions at a clinic in the local area in the future.
I work with adults in Dorset and across southern England. I’m cautious about working overseas because of risk and the need for local support.
I work with a variety of insurers and follow the standards of the NMC and BABCP.
“It is courageous to reach out and ask for support in a challenging time. You have that courage already.”
